ACCEL Questions & Answers

What is the ACCEL program?
ACCEL is a joint enrollment program that permits high school juniors and seniors to earn college credit while completing their high school graduation requirements.

What does it cost?
There is no direct cost to the participating high school or to the enrolled students. The program is sponsored by the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC). GSFC pays a qualified participating college $145.83 per student credit hour. Truett-McConnell College accepts this as full payment for our operating expense.

What are the requirements for the school?
1)The school must be accredited by any one of seven recognized accrediting associations. SACS,GAC,GACS.ACSI,GPSSAC,ACIS or SAIS
2) The school must have a qualified instructor for each course offered. Although credentials are reviewed individually for each teacher candidate by the participating college (Truett-McConnell College), in general a teacher must have a Master’s Degree and 18 semester hours of graduate work related to the course to be taught.

What are the requirements for the student?
1) The student must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident Alien
2) The student must have completed the tenth grade.
3) The student’s participation must be approved by a high school guidance counselor
4) The student must be accepted for admissions/enrollment by the College
5) The student must complete an on-line application to Georgia Student Finance Commission

What does the College do?
1) Approves course content (syllabus, objectives, textbook) as equivalent to a college-level course.
2) Approves course instructor credentials
3) Admits and enrolls students
4) Awards college credit for completed courses
5) Processes transcripts to transfer credit to other colleges, as requested by the student.
6) Provides instructional support to participating teachers

Will the credit transfer to colleges other than Truett-McConnell?
Acceptance of credit is always a decision of the receiving college. Truett-McConnell College is fully accredited by SACS and our credits are routinely accepted by other colleges. In Spring 2008 students enrolled in Accel courses with Truett-McConnell College requested transcripts and successfully transferred credit to 28 different colleges.

Why partner with Truett-McConnell College?
Although this program is available to any cooperating accredited high school and college pair, Truett-McConnell College has determined to offer the program to Christian high schools that share our mission to “equip students to make a positive impact for Christ through disciplined scholarship and Christian discipleship”.

Academic Enrichment Services

Academic Enrichment Services include honor’s courses, developmental studies, and learning assistance (tutoring in English and Math), and special support services. Academic enrichment services are designed to promote and strengthen the development of learning skills in areas that are basic to college success, and to enhance the overall academic environment.

Honors Courses

Honor courses are offered in select disciplines. These courses, offered on demand, are designed to challenge students and offer enrichment in various fields of study.

Developmental Studies

The developmental studies courses serve students who are in need of special academic assistance. Courses are designed to improve students' basic abilities in the areas of study skills, writing, reading, and mathematics. Students who place in developmental studies courses must complete successfully all developmental studies courses before completing more than 30 hours of college credit. A student may take any single developmental course a maximum of 3 times. These courses award institutional credit, which is nontransferable and will not count toward graduation. Any student who must take a developmental studies course must complete that course with a grade of "C" or better before enrolling for any higher numbered course in the same field.

Mathematics Placement

Placement in mathematics courses (both college-level and developmental) is determined by scores on the SAT or ACTS tests. Should the student not agree with his/her placement in a Mathematics course as the result of the SAT/ACT score, he/she may elect to take the COMPASS Examination. Information about placement policy may be obtained from the Registrar and/or academic advisors.

Additional information not revealed through test scores or extenuating circumstances must be presented before any appeal may be considered to the Vice President for Academic Services, who will make the final decision after consulting the department head for the area of mathematics.

English Placement

Placement in English courses (both college-level and developmental) is determined by scores on the SAT/ACT tests. Should the student not agree with his/her placement in an English course as the result of the SAT/ACT score, he/she may elect to take the COMPASS Examination. Information about placement policy may be obtained from the Registrar and /or academic advisors.

Additional information not revealed through test scores or extenuating circumstances must be presented before any appeal may be considered to the Vice President for Academic Services, who will make the final decision after consulting the department head for the area of English.

Course Limitations for Developmental Studies Students

Advisors will direct students to enroll in courses the students should be able to complete successfully while in developmental studies courses. Students who are placed in EN 99 will be directed to take courses that do not require strong writing skills, and students placed in MA 98 or MA 99 will be directed to take courses that do not require strong mathematical skills.

Tutoring

A tutoring service in mathematics and English is provided during regular hours, and additional tutoring sessions may be arranged at other hours. Tutorial videocassettes and computer programs are also available for students. There is no cost to students for these services.

Support Services

The Office of Special Support Services provides reasonable accommodations to students who complete a Disclosure of Disability Form and provide the appropriate documentation of disability. Accommodations for students with disabilities are individually determined.
