TMC HONORS REV. RASTUS SALTER

Truett-McConnell College, Cleveland, GA, honored beloved Georgia Baptist pastor Rev. Rastus Salter by naming its new Bachelor of Arts in Christian Studies degree program for him in a kick-off celebration on April 25 at Second Baptist Church, Warner Robins.
Held in the church that Rev. Salter pastored for 48 years, the kick-off celebration featured comments by Governor Sonny Perdue, a long-time member of Second Baptist Church. “I don’t think I’d be governor today if I hadn’t had the opportunity to sit under Rastus Salter’s solid ministry. Pastor Salter had a backbone of steel, and he taught me how to stand firm on the Word of God. Week after week, Rev. Salter proclaimed God’s Word,” said Governor Perdue.
Speaking as a TMC alumnus, Dr. Frank Cox, pastor of North Metro First Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, talked about the role the college has played in his life and in the lives of countless other students in its 60-year history.
Dr. J. Robert White, Executive Director of the GBC, spoke about Rev. Salter’s influence: “His godly influence on earth will live on through the lives of the young people who will study for the ministry at Truett-McConnell College.”
In 2004 Dr. Jerry W. Pounds, Sr., president of Truett-McConnell College met with Rev. Salter and shared his vision for a four-year degree program in Christian studies at TMC based on solid biblical teaching and theology. Rev. Salter was enthusiastic in his support, saying that he had been praying for a long time for such a program in one of the Georgia Baptist colleges. At that time, there was no way of knowing when such a degree program might be approved by the college’s accrediting agency, the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
When the news came that Rastus Salter had passed away on January 7, 2005, Dr. Pounds felt that it would be an appropriate memorial to the life and ministry of Rev. Salter to name the degree program in his memory. When approval from the accrediting agency came in December 2005, the college began to cement plans for the Rastus Salter Christian Studies Program.
“Through the new bachelor’s degree in Christian studies at Truett-McConnell College, Rastus Salter’s influence is sure to continue its vitality in the future as young people are prepared for the ministry. We wanted to honor a pastor who served his church faithfully for so many years and who mentored so many young men in his church to be preachers,” said Dr. Pounds.
Truett-McConnell is now accepting applications for the program to begin in the fall semester 2006. The program includes four concentrations of study, from which a student may choose one. A concentration in Biblical and Theological Studies prepares students for further work at a seminary; a Christian Ministry concentration prepares students for the pastoral ministry; the Youth Ministry concentration offers students a study of youth culture and needs; and a Missions concentration equips students for work in a missions environment.

Speaking as a young minister mentored by Rev. Salter in Second Baptist Church, Rev. Jeremy Morton, now pastor of Cross Point Church in Perry, said: “Rastus Salter is one of my heroes. He consistently led his church to do the right thing. He invested his life into making a total Kingdom impact. Brother Rastus has borne fruit that will last.”
The Rastus Salter Campaign Steering Committee has been named to encourage donations that would endow the program. The committee is led by Honorary Chairman Governor Sonny Perdue and includes Rev. Johnny Ellison, Rev. Tim Millwood, Mr. Jack Nash, Rev. Darrell Quinn, Mr. Charlie Gibbs, Rev. Gary Morton, Rev. Jim Perdue, and Mr. Glen Salter. All gifts to the program may be directed to the Office of Advancement Services, Truett-McConnell College, 100 Alumni Drive, Cleveland, GA 30528.
Glen Salter, oldest son of Rev. Salter and his wife, Lena, represented the Salter family, saying: “My family is deeply moved by this decision to name the Christian studies program after my father. We pray that this program will prepare men and women of all ages for full-time Christian service.”
CAMPAIGN KICKOFF FOR DORA SPIVA EDUCATION PROGRAM

The Choestoe community in Union County is home to one of the area’s “national treasures,” Mrs. Dora Hunter Allison Spiva. On February 10, 2006, “Aunt Dora,” as she is affectionately known to family and friends alike, celebrated her 101st birthday among the people of Choestoe, who love her dearly.

Mrs. Dora Spiva (left) enjoys a light-hearted moment with one of her former students, Ethelene Dyer Jones, an alumna of Truett-McConnell in the class of 1949.

The following day Truett-McConnell College, Cleveland, GA, hosted a luncheon in her honor at Choestoe Baptist Church, to give her family and friends an opportunity to celebrate her birthday with her, to announce the naming of the newly-approved four-year education program at the college for her, and to kick off the campaign to endow the Dora Spiva Education Program.

In spite of a winter weather advisory in effect and snowplows hard at work clearing the Neels Gap Road, more than 100 people came to celebrate with Mrs. Spiva, all with stories about the influence she has had on their lives. Ladies of the Blairsville Garden Club, of which Mrs. Spiva is a member, donated their services to make about two dozen arrangements of fresh flowers for the tables. Members of Choestoe Baptist Church, led by the pastor, Rev. Dick Stilwell, were on hand to help with setup and cleanup.

The Dora Spiva Education Program at Truett-McConnell College was officially launched at the luncheon by Dr. Jerry W. Pounds, Sr., president of the college. In speaking about the program, Dr. Susan Gannaway, education department head, commented that the Bachelor of Science in Education degree program at TMC will begin in the fall of 2006 with teacher training in early childhood education and later expand into other grade levels as well. She ended her remarks by saying: “Truett-McConnell will train teachers that the area schools will be proud to employ. We trust that Dora Spiva will be proud that they are trained in an education program that bears her name.”

Truett-McConnell College was chartered in 1946 as a two-year college and this year is celebrating its 60th year of operation. In 2003 the college began its first bachelor’s degree programs in music and in December 2005 received approval to start two more four-year degrees, one of which is the Bachelor of Science in Education with a concentration in early childhood education. In considering an influential educator in north Georgia for whom the education program could be named, college officials settled quickly on Mrs. Spiva, whose long career in public education and her outstanding Christian example helped shape the lives of hundreds of young people.

Local residents who spoke to Mrs. Spiva’s influence on their own lives at the birthday luncheon included Ethelene Dyer Jones, Austine Hunter Wallis, Superintendent of Schools Tommy Stephens, and former Superintendent of Schools Clyde Collins, all current or retired educators themselves. State Representative Charles Jenkins presented to Mrs. Spiva a resolution passed by the Georgia General Assembly, commending her on her illustrious career in education and on her long and fruitful life.

At the conclusion of the celebration, just before the two large birthday cakes were cut, Dr. DeWitt Cox, consultant with Truett-McConnell, and Dr. Sam Cash, TMC Vice President for Advancement Services, challenged those in attendance to lead the way in raising funds to provide endowment for the Dora Spiva Education Program at Truett-McConnell.

The program included participation by the fathers of some of this year’s graduates. Dr. Jody Hice, pastor of First Baptist Church, Bethlehem, GA, and father of graduate Anna Joy Hice, delivered the invocation. The benediction was given by Rev. John Drake, executive minister for administration at North Metro First Baptist Church in Lawrenceville and father of two of this year’s graduates, Erin and Ryan Drake.
Featured in the commencement service were two members of the college family who recently received awards at the college’s annual Honors Day in April. Mrs. Deborah Garrett, administrative assistant in the Office of Admissions and recent recipient of the Presidential Achievement Award, was the ringer of the big bell in the center of the campus, marking the opening of the commencement service. Dr. Michael T. Justus, recent recipient of the 2006 Award for Faculty Excellence, was the faculty marshal for the academic procession.
The featured speaker for commencement was Dr. Wayne Robertson, pastor of Morningside Baptist Church in Valdosta and immediate past president of the Georgia Baptist Convention. He spoke about the need for the graduates to focus on conversion, commitment, and conduct.
