TREATS AT TRUETT A SUCCESS
After a hiatus of a few years, a community event on Halloween night returned to Truett-McConnell College this year. Treats at Truett was sponsored by the college’s Student Services staff and promoted as a safe and fun alternative to traditional Halloween trick-or-treating. The family-oriented event drew more than 1,600 people to the campus.
The Student Services Staff under the leadership of Jonathan Morris, Andrew Gailey, Kate Bushey and Chris Davidson planned and carried out several events on the campus between the hours of 6:00 and 9:00 PM on October 31, including a marshmallow roast, a hand mime show, face painting, a fun house, hay rides and traditional Halloween treats available for children in several locations around the campus.
Students in all of the college’s residence halls participated in the event, assisted by volunteer groups from Helen First Baptist Church, Mount Yonah Baptist Church and The Bridge Church.
According to the Student Services staff, “We are already looking forward to another successful event next year.”

The Spider Monkeys Champions of the Flag Football Season

The 2008 Truett-McConnell College flag football season came to an end with an unlikely team posing for the championship picture when it was all over.

The standings were close all season with the Cleveland Crazies staying just ahead of the rest of the teams for most of the season.  When the playoffs started, no one would have guessed that the team that finished the season in a tie for last place in the standings would make a miraculous run through the playoffs.

The Spider Monkeys, who finished the year in fifth place—out of five teams—started their run with a play-in game against the team known as the Jon K Revolution.  The Monkeys won this game to set up their showdown game with the heavily-favored number-one seeded Cleveland Crazies squad.

Led by team captain Casey Dixon, the Spider Monkeys fought through adversity and pulled off the upset against the defending champions from last year, sending the Monkeys to the championship game against the second-seeded Ducks.  The Ducks, led by the league-leading passer John Frketic, had secured their spot in the championship game with a hard-fought win over third-seeded Pizza Time.

In the championship game, the Spider Monkeys were again the underdog.  The atmosphere at the championship game was exciting with music blaring and banners raised.  Many students came out to support both teams.  Both teams fought hard and rose to the occasion.  The game came down to the wire, and the Spider Monkeys were able to shock the campus community by completing their run to the championship.  They defeated the Ducks 20-18 in a well-played game for both teams.

All five teams showed great attitudes on the field this season.  Before every game, the players and officials gathered at midfield and prayed together, asking God to keep their hearts and minds focused on Him.  It was gratifying to see students competing in a fun sport like flag football and showing glory to God in all they did on the field at the same time.
