Volleyball Program Coming to TMC

Cleveland, GA (May 18, 2011) –Truett-McConnell College is welcoming a women’s volleyball program to its athletic programkeva elkins starting this fall. Assistant Softball Coach, Kevia Elkins, will be coaching the new volleyball team.

The season will begin shortly after classes start and the team might play conference teams but will not participate in the post season as it is their inaugural year. Athletic director, Chris Eppling, is excited about the new program.

“I’m thrilled to have the enhanced involvement of Coach Elkins. I anticipate seeing what the Lord will do through Coach Elkins and the stories we will hear from the students about how God has worked in their lives,” Eppling stated.

Elkins firmly states that she wants to build a great foundation through good communication and by setting an expectation.

“If you can get everyone on the same page, then as athletes and competitors, the rest should happen. I want the athletes to come out of volleyball, after four years, feeling like they were a part of a competitive program, and  I want them to feel like it was the best years of their life,” stated Elkins.

Most importantly, Elkins plans to promote Christian athleticism just like she does in the softball program.

“That is the first thing we tell them is expected and if that is not a place that they feel like they can be, then they just cannot be there. Such aspects as team Bible studies and daily discussions are implanted in our program from day one. I also plan to lead by example. I am a big believer that your actions speak louder than your words and so, I can tell them all day long that I’m a Christian, but I have to actually live it out. I would never ask them to do something that I do not do. I insist on having that moral foundation so that when people watch how we act and carry ourselves in competition, they know that there is something different about us,” Elkins affirmed.

In addition to coaching, Elkins will be a physical education instructor at TMC. The coach is currently in the process of gathering equipment and states that a tryout date will be announced soon.  Several TMC students have already expressed interest in participating in volleyball and Elkins has started recruiting. The coach hopes for a team of about 12-15 women.

Truett-McConnell College equips students to fulfill the Great Commission by fostering a Christian worldview through a Biblically-centered liberal arts education.
