The Early Childhood Education Program is a cohort model: a group of students proceeds through the program together beginning in the fall of their junior year. Courses are offered on the Truett-McConnell College campus during day-time hours. The program is aligned with the Georgia Framework for Teaching and is field-based and developmental. The program is consistent with the mission and vision of the institution and meets national and state standards for the preparation of elementary school teachers.
Overview of the Program
- It is 128 semester hours in length. (See Degree Checklist)
- It prepares students to teach at the pre-kindergarten through fifth grade levels.
- Admission to the teacher education program in the junior year requires a 2.75 overall GPA, along with testing and other requirements. (See Applying to the Teacher Education Program)
- Application to the teacher education program is made only after the student has completed 40 semester hours of college-level work. (See Applying to the Teacher Education Program)
- Applicants must provide proof of liability insurance valid through the projected graduation date. (See SPAGE website for registration)
- Students who are admitted into the program must submit to a criminal background check.
- It involves over 1,000 hours of field placement experiences.
- It involves morning field placement fall and spring semesters during junior year and fall semester senior year.
- Students complete their internship during spring semester of senior year.
- All students will be placed in partner schools for field experiences and at least one of those placements will be in a diverse setting.
