Lyons, Fullem and Jefferson named Scholar-Athletes
Courtney Lyons, a sophomore from McDonough, GA was recently named as a girls got game - National Fast-pitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar-Athlete. Through this program, the NFCA honors collegiate softball teams and players for their success in the classroom. To receive the award the student-athlete must have a minimum 3.5 g.p.a. for the 2008-2009 academic year. Lyons, an outfielder who attended Union Grove High School is an exceptional student. She is a leader on the team not only with her strong academic work ethic, but with her dedication to the Truett-McConnell softball program. Lyons is a reflection of the type of student Truett-McConnell College strives to produce: a woman of faith and a servant leader who is academically strong and continually seeks to learn and grow as a student and as an individual.
Also receiving this award are former players Amy Jefferson, from Elberton, GA, and Katie Fullem, from Suwanee, GA. Fullem currently attends UGA and is a student in the audiology department while Jefferson attends GCSU and is studying occupational therapy. Please join me in congratulating these student-athletes for their achievements in the classroom and wishing them continued success in all they do. Personally I would like to say how honored I am to have had the opportunity to coach and work with these young women and I would like to thank them for representing the TMC softball program in such a positive manner.

Kevia Brown named Assistant Coach
Kevia Brown recently accepted the assistant softball position for the Lady Bears. She was a two-sport athlete in college participating in softball and basketball. She trasferred to North Georgia College where she played basketball and graduated with a Social Science degree.
Coach Brown has been involved with athletics for many years, and has coached an AAU basketball team for the past 5 years. She is very active in her church, Oak Grove Baptist Church of Cumming, GA, and has taught a royal ambassadors class for young children for the past four years. I know that the experience Brown brings from both her playing career and coaching experience will help to enhance our softball program. Please join me in welcoming Kevia into the Truett-McConnell College community.

2009 TMC SOFTBALL SOPHOMORES

The Truett-McConnell College softball team will open up their 2009 season next Friday on the road against USC-Salkehatchie in Allendale, SC. As the season is almost underway, Coach Deitz gives an inside look on the Season to come.
“This is our fourth year of competition and we are the most talented that we have ever been. I look for our win-loss record to continue to improve.” (2 – 36 1st yr. 21-31 2nd yr., 27-24 3rd yr.) “Last year was our first winning record and I look for the winning percentage to be even higher this year.” The diamond Lady Bears return 9 sophomores who have a lot of freshman experience to build on. Returning for the Lady Bears are 5 players who hit over .300. Misti Alston .368, Lauren Hogan .355, Meaghan Reese .354, Katie Fullem .313, and Amy Jefferson .302. Alston is a lefty slapper who is very fast. She uses her speed well to help manufacture runs. Hogan, Reese, Fullem, and Jefferson all get the bat on the ball well and hit it hard. In addition Ashley O’Shields had some big hits from the DP spot and she will be called upon again for offensive production. Freshmen who will also be offensive threats are Lacey Roberts, and twins Dani and Courtney Lyons.
Defensively sophomore Kara Moore leads the way in the outfield. She is joined by Reese, Fullem, and C. Lyons. “These girls have strong arms and make great reads on the ball. The sun is a factor in left field, but we look to use that as a great disadvantage to our visiting opponents.” Deitz said. The infield will be anchored by Hogan, Alston, and Jefferson, who will be joined by Roberts and Hayle Swinson.
On the mound sophomore Amber Young will be joined by freshmen Bridget Savage and Meaghan Fulcher.. Each pitcher brings a different array of pitches to the mound which should make it tough on the opposition. Freshman catcher D. Lyons will handle the pitching staff and her defensive skills will make it tough for other teams to steal a base.
“We have high expectations for the season we are ready to begin play and see if the girls can live up to the goals we have set and expectations that they have for themselves and their teammates”.
The TMC Softball Program would like to invite the community to come watch and support the team. Their home games are played at the White County Recreation Department on Field 5. “Lou and his staff, do a great job of preparing the field for practice and play and we appreciate all of their hard work” said Deitz. So if you are going to be in the area plan to stop by for an afternoon of fun for the entire family. As always you can keep track of all Truett-McConnell College athletics information by visiting the athletics link at www.truett.edu.
